FAQ
Can I buy extra baggage online after booking?
Yes. Add checked baggage when purchasing your ticket on avianca.com, through Manage your booking (booking code + last name), or during online check-in.
Where do I buy extra baggage?
On avianca.com when purchasing your ticket, in Manage your booking, during online check-in, or at the airport check-in counter (tell the agent how many bags to add and make the payment).
Until when can I buy checked baggage online?
Anytime via Manage your booking, and via online check-in up to 48 hours before departure (24 hours before for flights to and from the United States and Canada). The published fee table applies to purchases made more than 48 hours before the flight's scheduled departure.
How does Avianca calculate extra baggage charges?
Per piece, by route and by bag number (1st, 2nd, 3rd bag). For example, an economy 2nd bag costs from USD 35 within Ecuador and Guatemala, from USD 115 to/from North America and from EUR/GBP 140 from Europe. Basic and Light fares pay for the first checked bag; Classic, Flex and Business include it.
What are the baggage limits and how many extra bags can I add?
Each checked bag may weigh up to 23 kg (Economy) or 32 kg (Business) and measure up to 158 linear cm. Overweight baggage is accepted up to 45 kg (32 kg on flights to/from Europe) and oversized baggage up to 230 linear cm. Outside promotional travel dates you may check up to 6 bags; on selected routes within certain travel dates the allowance is up to 2 bags.
Is it cheaper to buy baggage online in advance vs at the airport?
Yes — Avianca states that buying in advance saves time and money, and the published checked baggage fee table only covers purchases made more than 48 hours before departure. Example for Basic-fare carry-on within Colombia: from COP 89,000 on avianca.com vs from COP 140,000 at online check-in or the airport.
What are the overweight and oversized baggage charges?
Airport rates including taxes, per piece, on top of the purchased allowance. Overweight 25–32 kg / 33–45 kg: e.g. COP 150,000 / COP 200,000 within Colombia and USD 160 / USD 200 to/from North America; baggage over 32 kg cannot travel to/from Europe. Oversized (low/high season): e.g. USD 160 / USD 185 to/from North America. Baggage over 230 linear cm must be sent via Avianca Cargo.
Do partner or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?
Yes. On interline tickets, unified baggage conditions apply from origin to destination, but to add services — including baggage — on segments operated by another airline, you must contact the operating airline and review its policies. Elite-status extra bags only apply when the ticket was issued by Avianca and the itinerary includes only Avianca-operated segments.
Can I get a refund for prepaid baggage?
In limited cases: if your flight was rescheduled, changed aircraft, or cancelled; for Flex or Business fares, together with the ticket refund (as of June 1, 2023); or when the service was not provided due to the airline's fault (all fares). Request it through the Refunds form before the original departure date and keep the EMD document; bookings made via an agency must be refunded through the agency.
Are there any important baggage exceptions or restrictions?
Carry-on baggage is included in all fares except Basic, where it must be purchased. LifeMiles Elite (Silver, Gold, Diamond, Magno), Star Alliance Gold and Smiles Gold/Diamond members receive extra checked bags on Classic, Flex or Business fares. On international flights departing from Bogotá, wrapped baggage is not accepted.
