FAQ

Can I buy extra baggage online after booking?

Yes. China Eastern offers the '随心带' (Sui Xin Dai) prepaid baggage service. You can purchase extra checked baggage online via the official website, mobile app, or M-site up to 6 hours before departure.

Where do I buy extra baggage?

Go to the China Eastern website (ceair.com) → Self Service → Prepaid Baggage, or use the China Eastern APP. You will need your flight number, ticket number, name, ID number, and phone number to proceed. It can also be purchased at China Eastern ticket offices.

When is the deadline to buy extra baggage online?

The prepaid baggage must be purchased at least 6 hours before the scheduled flight departure time.

How many extra bags can I buy, and what are the bag limits?

Under the piece-based system, each passenger can purchase up to 5 extra pieces per flight segment. Each piece must not exceed 23 kg and 158 cm total dimensions. Under the weight-based system (domestic), you can purchase up to 30 kg in increments of 5 kg. For prepaid weight-based baggage, options are 5/10/15/20/25/30 kg.

How does China Eastern calculate extra baggage charges?

Pricing depends on the route and whether it uses a piece-based or weight-based system. International routes are piece-based with fixed fees per route zone: Americas (1,300/2,000 RMB), Australia/NZ (1,100/2,000 RMB), Europe/Japan/Korea (1,000/2,000 RMB), Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan (800/1,000 RMB), and other regions (800/1,200 RMB). Domestic flights use a weight-based system at 1.5% of the highest Economy fare per kg. Prepaid baggage (随心带) is tiered by route with prices displayed at the time of purchase.

What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?

For Economy class, baggage weighing 23-32 kg is charged 1,000 RMB as an overweight fee on most international routes. Oversized baggage measuring 159-203 cm total dimensions costs 1,000 RMB, and over 203 cm costs 2,000 RMB (2,700 RMB for Americas routes). Overweight, oversized, and extra baggage fees are charged cumulatively. Maximum weight per piece is 32 kg on most routes (45 kg for North America, excluding Canada).

Is it cheaper to buy extra baggage online in advance vs at the airport?

China Eastern offers the prepaid '随心带' product online with route-based tiered pricing which may be lower than airport excess baggage rates. Prepaid purchase requires completing the transaction at least 6 hours before departure. Airport purchase follows the standard excess baggage fee schedule.

Do partner-operated or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?

The prepaid '随心带' baggage service only applies to flights operated by China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines. For codeshare or partner-operated flights, standard excess baggage fees and rules of the operating carrier apply.

Can I pay for extra baggage with cards or loyalty points?

Online payment by credit card and other standard online payment methods are accepted. Eastern Miles members can use their miles to pay for prepaid baggage: 10 miles = 1 RMB for the '随心带' product, for the member or their designated beneficiaries (beneficiary list must be set up in advance).

Can I get a refund or transfer extra baggage if I cancel or change my booking?

Prepaid baggage must be refunded in full (cannot refund part of it). If you rebook within the same fare class, the prepaid baggage transfers automatically. For different fare class or ticket endorsement, you must cancel the prepaid baggage before departure (no fee) and repurchase. Refund requests must be made through the original purchase channel before check-in, within 12 months of purchase.

Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?

Basic Economy Class passengers on some international routes may have zero free baggage allowance, but can still prepay for baggage. If actual excess baggage weight is less than what was prepaid, no refund is given for the difference; if more, the difference must be paid at the airport. Oversize, overweight, and extra baggage fees are cumulative.
