FAQ

Can I buy extra baggage online?

Generally no for Madagascar Airlines' own network: the official FAQ states that an extra bag or excess baggage can only be purchased at the airport on the day of the flight, subject to aircraft load. Regional routes offer an advance-purchase rate (EUR 70 for one extra 20 kg bag). MD-code long-haul flights operated by Air France or Corsair are purchased through those airlines' own channels.

Where do I buy extra baggage?

At the airport check-in counter on the day of the flight (domestic and medium-haul networks). Regional routes offer an advance rate of EUR 70 for one extra 20 kg bag. Long-haul MD-code flights are handled by the operating partner (Air France, Corsair) on their own websites.

How does Madagascar Airlines calculate extra baggage charges?

Charges depend on the route and on purchase timing. Domestic: 190 000 MGA per extra 20 kg piece, or tiered overweight fees of 60 000-190 000 MGA. Regional: EUR 70 for an extra 20 kg bag, then EUR 50 per additional kg up to 9 kg. The airport excess rate starts at 30 000 MGA per kg. Long-haul MD-code flights follow the operating partner's tariff.

How much baggage can I take, and what are the bag limits?

Maximum checked dimensions: 158 cm total (L+W+H). Domestic: Economy 1 x 20 kg, Business 1 x 30 kg (Légèreté fare: 0 hold bags); medium-haul (Indian Ocean/Africa): Economy 1 x 20 kg, Business 1 x 30 kg (Ecolight: 0 hold); long-haul MD-code: Economy 2 x 23 kg, Business/Premium 2 x 32 kg. Max 40 kg per bag on the Mayotte network.

Do partner-operated long-haul flights have different baggage rules?

Yes. MD-code long-haul flights operated by Air France or Corsair follow those airlines' own excess baggage policies - Air France charges per extra piece/overweight/oversized with prices varying by destination (max 23 kg per bag); Corsair likewise sells extra bags online or at the airport. Check the operating carrier's website for exact rates.

When is the deadline to buy extra baggage?

Special or oversized baggage must be declared at the time of booking or no later than 48 hours before departure. Excess baggage for the own network is paid at the airport on the day of the flight; regional routes allow an advance purchase. Long-haul flights follow the operating partner's deadlines.

Is it cheaper to buy extra baggage in advance vs at the airport?

On regional routes an advance rate of EUR 70 per extra bag is published. For long-haul partner flights, the site notes Air France sells excess baggage online at a lower price than at the airport, while Corsair sells online at booking or later. On the domestic network no online option exists - the airport charge applies on the day of the flight.

What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?

Domestic overweight tiers: 60 000 MGA (under 3 kg), 90 000 MGA (3 kg), 120 000 MGA (3-4 kg), 150 000 MGA (4-5 kg), 190 000 MGA (5 kg+). Regional: EUR 50 per kg in advance and EUR 80 per kg for bags over 159 cm. Bags over 158 cm must be declared at booking and incur a surcharge paid at the airport.

Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?

Excess baggage is accepted only if the aircraft's load permits, so airport purchase is not guaranteed. Special baggage payment is accepted only at the airport, and sports equipment over 32 kg must be sent as freight. Domestic and long-haul baggage rules differ by fare family (e.g. Légèreté and Ecolight fares include no checked bag).
