FAQ

Can I buy extra baggage online after booking an AirAsia X flight?

Yes. Log in to airasia.com, open 'Purchases', select your booking, choose 'Add-ons (Seats, Baggage, Meals)' and then 'Baggage'. You can also buy via chat with Bo on the AirAsia MOVE website or app.

Where do I buy extra baggage for AirAsia X?

Online via Purchases on airasia.com or the AirAsia MOVE app, via chat with Bo, or at the airport counter. Pre-booking online is generally cheapest (up to 80% savings claimed), though on international routes the official airport counter/KIOSK first-20 kg rate (MYR 250) is lower than the online 20 kg tier; the airport counter rate applies unless you buy at least 4 hours before departure, in which case the pre-book rate is given.

When is the deadline to buy extra baggage online?

Pre-book online or chat with Bo up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. At the airport, the pre-book rate applies if you purchase at least 4 hours before departure.

How does AirAsia X calculate extra baggage charges?

By weight tier, not by piece: 15/20/25/30/40/50/60 kg per passenger per way, up to 60 kg total (50/60 kg tiers have limited units per flight). USA routes (KUL-HNL) are the exception - a per-piece system with only 20 kg and 40 kg pieces. Official rates are published in the D7 fee schedule in 13 currencies and are guaranteed not to exceed the published table.

How many bags and what weight limits apply?

Up to 60 kg checked baggage per passenger per way; each individual bag must not exceed 32 kg and 119 cm (H) x 81 cm (W) x 119 cm (L). Bags over 32 kg are not accepted. Cabin baggage is 7 kg (two bags: 56x23x36 cm main plus 40x30x10 cm small bag); Xtra Carry-On adds 7 kg (14 kg total, one bag max 10 kg).

Is it cheaper to buy baggage online in advance than at the airport?

Generally yes - AirAsia states savings of up to 80% by pre-booking. One official quirk: on international routes the flat 'first 20 kg at the airport counter' rate (MYR 250) equals the KIOSK rate and is below the online during-initial-booking 20 kg tier (MYR 334), while excess per-kg fees at the airport (MYR 75/kg) are far above pre-booked per-kg equivalents.

What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?

Excess weight above your purchased allowance is charged per kg at check-in at the prevailing rate (e.g. MYR 75/kg international, MYR 60/kg domestic), billed in the departure country's currency. Sports equipment and checked baggage allowances cannot be combined, and sports items may require special handling.

Are there differences between AirAsia X (D7) and short-haul AirAsia (AK) baggage rules?

Yes. AirAsia X has its own official fee schedule with different (higher) international rates, offers a 15 kg tier domestically but not internationally, and operates A330 long-haul aircraft. USA routes (KUL-HNL) use a per-piece 20/40 kg system instead of the weight-tier system. Value Pack (20 kg), Premium Flex (20 kg) and Premium Flatbed (40 kg) include checked baggage.

Can I get a refund if I cancel or change my extra baggage purchase?

Once baggage weight is purchased it is non-refundable. Pre-booked baggage is not refunded for schedule changes; the allowance stays attached to the booking. Refund eligibility for baggage on cancelled flights follows the fare rules of your ticket.

Do partner-operated or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?

The official D7 fee schedule applies to direct flights with carrier code D7 only; fees are chargeable for each stop of the journey on multi-sector itineraries. Check the fare rules of any partner-operated segment in your booking.
