FAQ

Can I buy extra baggage online after booking?

Yes. After booking, go to the 'Manage Booking' section on the Air India website or app, enter your PNR and last name, and purchase prepaid excess baggage.

Where do I buy extra baggage?

You can purchase extra baggage through: (1) Manage Booking on the Air India website or mobile app, (2) Air India City Booking Offices (CTO) and Airport Offices (ATO), (3) Air India call centres, and (4) Authorised Air India agents.

When is the deadline to buy extra baggage online?

You can prepay for extra baggage (additional bags or total weight) up to 2 hours before departure. For a single bag exceeding the weight limit up to 32 kg, you must purchase at least 6 hours before departure.

How does Air India calculate extra baggage charges?

Air India uses two pricing concepts: Weight concept (charged per kg over the allowance) and Piece concept (charged per additional piece up to 23 kg). Weight concept applies on domestic India and many international routes; piece concept applies on routes to/from Europe, North America, Far East, and certain other markets. The fare class and specific route determine which concept applies to your ticket.

How many extra bags can I buy, and what are the bag limits?

Each checked bag cannot exceed 32 kg / 70 lb. In piece-concept markets, each extra piece has a weight allowance of 23 kg / 50 lb. Bags exceeding 158 cm / 62 in (L+B+H) are oversized and subject to additional fees. Maximum dimension for checked baggage is 272 cm (total of all pieces combined).

What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?

Overweight: In piece-concept markets, each piece has a standard 23 kg allowance. Bags between 23–32 kg incur heavy piece charges. Bags over 32 kg are not accepted as checked baggage and must be shipped as cargo. Oversized: Baggage exceeding 158 cm (L+B+H) is oversized. Items exceeding 300 cm or 32 kg must be transported as cargo.

Can I get a refund or transfer extra baggage if I cancel or change my booking?

Prepaid excess baggage is non-transferable. Full refunds are provided if Air India cancels the flight. For voluntary cancellations by the passenger at least 48 hours before departure (subject to fare terms), a full refund applies. No-show results in no refund. No partial or complete refund is given at check-in for unused excess baggage.

Is it cheaper to buy extra baggage online in advance vs at the airport?

Air India applies the same rate structure for prepaid and airport purchases. However, prepaying online saves time at the airport and guarantees availability, especially during peak travel periods.

Do partner-operated or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?

Yes. Prepaid excess baggage is available for all Air India flights except interline and codeshare flights. For codeshare or partner-operated flights, baggage rules may vary. Check with Air India or the operating carrier for specific policies.

Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?

Prepaid excess baggage is not applicable to infants. It is only valid for the flight specified in the booking. For round-trip tickets, separate payment is needed for each segment. If your flight date/time changes, the excess baggage allowance transfers to the new flight — contact customer support. Prices are subject to change; the price at time of purchase is final.
